Today marks the start of Covered California’s 4th annual Open Enrollment Period for the 2017 benefit year. Mark your calendar! The dates for this year’s “Open Season” as some are calling it are:
November 1st-January 31st
Effective dates will vary depending on when a Covered California application is submitted.
- December 15th is the enrollment deadline for a January 1st effective date
- January 15th is the enrollment deadline for a February 1st effective date
- January 31st is the enrollment deadline for a March 1st effective date
The last day of the 2017 Open Enrollment Period will be January 31st.
The Open Enrollment Period allows those who don’t have health insurance, or a qualifying life event to sign up on an individual or family health plan for 2017. It’s also a time for those already enrolled with Covered California to renew their existing health plan, or change levels of coverage or insurance companies.
With Covered California’s rates increasing an average of 13.2% statewide, they are heralding the message for consumers to shop around. The PPO plans offered by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield have the highest rate increase, so we can expect to see people looking at cheaper options like an EPO or HMO. Another thing we will probably see are people moving from Gold or Silver plans to Bronze. It’s the HMO’s like Kaiser Permanente and Molina that have the lowest premium increase so we may see their member base grow as more consumers jump on board to offset costs.
