Emergency Short-Term Health Insurance

You never know when a medical emergency will arise. Even if you’re young and healthy, you could have an accident that results in severe injuries and delivers significant financial consequences. If you have a full-time job, your employer may provide access to health insurance that will cover most of the costs. But what happens if you’re a part-time worker with no benefits or someone who is in between jobs?

If you’re a permanent California resident or a green card holder who needs health insurance in the event of an emergency, short-term accident insurance from Health for California can offer a solution. We offer affordable coverage options — technically referred to as health plans instead of insurance — that can fill the gap until you have access to permanent protection. Our programs are ideal for unemployed individuals, students, people who missed the Obamacare open enrollment window or workers waiting for employer-provided health insurance to go into effect.

About Our Temporary Emergency Health Insurance Offerings

Health for CA offers affordable health plans through Aliera Healthcare. Aliera is not a traditional health insurance provider — it’s a Health Care Sharing Ministry (HCSM), which is a faith-based nonprofit organization that pools money from its members — somewhat similar to the premiums collected by insurance carriers — and uses the funds to cover their medical expenses. Because of its HCSM status, Aliera has greater flexibility (plans are not required to comply with many of the guidelines under the Affordable Care Act, for instance) and can charge lower rates.

Aliera InterimCare is a short-term emergency health insurance plan that will provide coverage if you’re injured in an accident or experience an illness that isn’t caused by a pre-existing medical condition. Plans last up to 11 months, and you can renew on a month-to-month basis during that time frame. You can also cancel your coverage at any time without incurring a penalty.

How Does Emergency Short-Term Health Insurance Work?

In most cases, you will need to meet your medical shared responsibility amount (MSRA) before coverage under the plan can begin. An MSRA is similar to the deductible under a traditional major medical insurance plan. However, while you may have to choose a deductible as high as $10,000 just to be able to afford the premium under a major medical policy, you can likely select a lower MSRA (amounts as low as $1,000 are available) and still experience significant savings under an Aliera temporary accident health insurance plan.

Upon meeting the MSRA, co-expenses — similar to co-pays under traditional insurance — may also apply.
