Health Insurance Options for Wildfires in CA

California has been experiencing damaging wildfires for several years now, and they do not seem to be letting up any time soon. To help you be prepared for any dangers, Health for California is opening a special enrollment period for anyone who can be affected by the wildfires.

Wildfires in CA

The wildfires in California are becoming more intense and destructive. This can be due to several factors, but the climate is the primary concern. Summer heat is getting drier, and droughts surely do not help. Dry air during the colder months can also contribute to brittle forests. In these cases, it only takes one spark from a lightning strike or rogue bonfire to start a forest fire.

As of August 2022, there have been over 5,800 fires burning over 200,000 acres of land so far this year. These numbers are subject to change as incidents occur throughout the year.

Special Enrollment Relating to CA Wildfires

Because of these encroaching dangers, Health for California is offering a special enrollment period. These periods allow individuals and their families to apply for health insurance outside the regular open enrollment periods. Special insurance enrollment covers any instances where emergency coverage is needed due to a qualifying life event.

Qualifying Life Events

Life can be exciting and challenging, all at the same time. A qualifying life event indicates anything that requires a significant life change. These circumstances can include events like moving to or within California, having a baby, adopting a child or getting married. It can also cover instances when you lose your job along with its health insurance benefits or if you are returning from active duty military service.

Wildfires are considered qualifying life events. If you have been affected by wildfires in any way in the past 60 days, you can qualify for health insurance in a special enrollment period.

It should be noted that there are exceptions that allow year-round health insurance applications. If you are federally recognized as American-Indian or Native Alaskan, you do not need a life event to apply. Additionally, any individual who qualifies for Medi-Cal is also eligible for this exception.

Keep in mind that to apply for a qualifying life event, you must submit an application within 60 days of the occurrence. Whatever day you submit your application will determine the date your health insurance will become effective.
