Released From Incarceration

If you were recently released from incarceration (jail or prison) you may find it important to secure health insurance. That last thing anyone needs is an unexpected medical expense that leaves you drowning in debt. Some people spend years paying off medical bills that they did not foresee having. The best way to avoid a situation like this is to buy coverage.

Every year there is a relatively short period of time in which anyone can shop for and purchase a Covered California health plan. This period is called Open Enrollment. Open enrollment usually takes place sometime between November and January. Generally if you need coverage and it’s not currently an Open Enrollment period, you’d be out of luck. Fortunately, your release from incarceration qualifies you for a special enrollment period of sixty days. So, if you were released in the last sixty days, you can shop for and enroll in a Health Plan even if we’re not currently in an open enrollment period.
